2017-02-27 12:15
On February 25, 2017, the Chinese Embassy in the Maldives visited Maafushi to hold the workshop on consular assistance and protection. H.E. Ambassador Wang Fukang, Counsellor Yang Yin and Head of the Consular Section Liu Jianxin were present at the workshop. Some General Managers from Maafushi Guesthouses and Hotels who accommodate the largest number of Chinese guests were also present.

Ambassador Wang noted that in recent years the Maldives has witnessed the increasing number of Chinese tourists, and China has been the largest tourist source country to Maldives for 7 consecutive years. With the opening up of inhabited islands for tourism and development of hospitality industry on the islands, some Chinese tourists would like to choose the guesthouses or hotels in the inhabited islands as their holiday destination due to their relatively good cost performance.

Ambassador Wang stressed that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the protection of personal safety and legitimate rights and interest of Chinese nationals overseas. Under the concept of "being people-oriented" and "diplomacy for the people", the Embassy resolutely spares no efforts to strengthen consular assistance and protection by precautions, along with guesthouses and hotels in the Maldives. The Embassy has taken a variety of preventive measures to minimize the number of tragic cases, especially related to the drowning of Chinese nationals. General Managers attending the workshop interacted actively with the Embassy and Ambassador Wang responded to each question with detailed answer.

Prior to the workshop, Ambassador Wang met with Ms. Majdha Ibrahim, Vice President of Maafushi Council. Both sides exchanged views on how to enhance exchanges and cooperation and to better serve the Chinese tourists in the Maldives.

In addition, Ambassador Wang visited 4 guesthouses and hotels in Maafushi, presented the brochures and posters of Kind Reminders for Chinese Holidaymakers in the Maldives and DVDs of Snorkeling in Maldives Safely and Enjoy Maldives Safely to the General Managers, and kindly requested for consistent quality services for Chinese tourists in order to ensure them a safe and memorable holiday in the Maldives.

At the closing of the workshop, Ambassador Wang cordially talked with the Chinese tourists participating in the workshop, presented to them the brochures of consular assistance and protection and raised their awareness for personal safety and proper etiquette as a tourist.
