On September 14-16, 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to Maldives, the first and the only of its kind since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1972. The fruitful visit is of great significance to China-Maldives relations.

During the visit, the two sides decided to upgrade the good-neighborly relations to a Future-Oriented All-Round Friendly and Cooperative Partnership.

Maldives welcomed and supported China’s initiative to build the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and agreed to actively participate in relevant cooperation. China agreed to support the construction of Male’-Hulhule’ Bridge and expansion & upgrading of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.

The two sides agreed to further enhance exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, education, human resources and health, etc. China would help Maldives with civil service staff-training, provide more scholarships for Maldivian students and assist Maldivians in studying the Chinese language.
