In September 2014, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Maldives, the Agreement on Expansion and Upgrading of Velana International Airport Project was signed to increase the capacity of the airport for the further development of tourism industry in Maldives.

On 7 November 2019 and 14 January 2021, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inspected the Expansion and Upgrading of Velana International Airport Project twice, and highly complimented BUCG’s quality of construction work and site management.

On 4 November 2021, the expanded west apron of Velana International Airport was opened for flight operations, which has nine aircraft stands that can accommodate both domestic and international flights.

On 31 January 2022, the new runway of the Velana International Airport was put into use, doubling the number of aircraft accommodated per hour from 8 to 16 planes.

On 7 January, 2022, to welcome Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Government of Maldives launched the operation of the new VIP terminal of the Velana International Airport with high-standard decoration, which will enhance the luxury travel experience.
