Table Tennis, also known as Ping Pong, has been connecting China & Maldives people for decades. In 1973, Maldives sent young athletes to participate in table tennis tournament held by China, unfolding the curtain of friendly exchanges between our two people in Ping Pong area.

Since then, this little charming ball has bonded together our two people. Mutual visits were held frequently. Visits of the Ping Pong Delegation of Henan Province in 2013 & 2016, boosted the sports exchanges and promoted the people-to-people friendship.

On April 8 2016, the Table Tennis Association of Maldives held “World Table Tennis For All Day” marathon. This 24-hour event was joined by China’s Table Tennis Pro Jiang Jialiang, who was warmly received by former Maldivian President Yameen.

In commemoration of 45th anniversary of China-Maldives relations, a set of special stamps were issued by Maldives, including ones with World Champions Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen. On March 14, 2018, H.E. Mohamed Faisal, former Maldivian Ambassador to China, paid a visit to China national team of table tennis and had a friendly match with Chinese world champions.

On March 18, 2019, H.E. Zhang Lizhong, former Chinese Ambassador to Maldives, inaugurated the newly renovated China-assisted Table Tennis Hall which helps boost the capacity building of Maldives Association of Table Tennis and promotes the development of the sport of Ping Pong.

Besides hardware support, China also provided professional training to Maldives National Table Tennis Team, such as Fathimath Dheema Ali, who has won gold in South Asian Table Tennis Tournament 2019 and warmly received by President Solih. Looking forward to more solid cooperation between China & Maldives in sports and assisting more Maldivians athletes to step on the world stage!
